COMPOST
The waste collected from institutional, commercial, residential and street wastes within the jurisdiction of Welimada Pradeshiya Sabha can be divided into two categories: biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Biodegradable waste is separated into short-term biodegradable and long-term biodegradable wastes and the short-term biodegradable wastes are easily diverted to fertilizer production. Long-term biodegradable wastes are collected separately and directed to the production of organic fertilizer and bio-char and the remaining parts are disposed of at the end.
Non-biodegradable wastes are separated into PET bottles and polythene and are baled using a baling machine and reused, while items such as iron and cardboard are also directed for recycling.
In the Welimada Pradeshiya Sabha solid waste management process, waste that decomposes quickly is easily used for compost production, while materials that do not decompose quickly such as orange peels, banana stems, banana leaves are cut into pieces and dried and used for biochar production. Polythene and PET bottles are selected for baling. After that process, any waste that cannot be used anymore is safely disposed of in the open ground.
The waste collected and sorted in the main city and sub-districts is transported to the 03rd Pillar, Solid Waste Management. (By tractor and compactor vehicle) Polythene and plastic are separated from the waste that is transported in this way, baled using a baling machine and sent for sale.
Food, vegetable, and fruit wastes that can be used for organic fertilizer production are separated into piles and these are turned over once every 7 days. The leachate collected here is sent to these piles. The waste that has been turned over for about 2 to 2 ½ months is finally sent to the processing center to be piled up again. After being kept there for a week, they are dried in the processing center, shredded by a multi-purpose shredder, crushed by a screening machine, packed in 25 kg bags, stored, and sent to the market.
Baled polythene has already been used to prepare the beds and side walls of the cultivation model.
The organic fertilizer produced at our Solid Waste Management Center has been recommended by the National Fertilizer Secretariat and has also obtained the quality certificate from the Industrial Technology Institute. A business registration certificate has also been obtained.
Organic fertilizer is produced in accordance with the quality certificates at the Solid Waste Management Center of the Welimada Pradeshiya Sabha. 1 kg of that fertilizer is available for purchase at a price of Rs. 15.00.
