Introduction

Many environmental and health problems arise due to improper disposal of garbage in urban areas. The excessive smell caused by the improper disposal of garbage from one place to another creates an uncomfortable environment for people to live in, various diseases spread by animals near garbage dumps, harmful gases are released into the atmosphere due to burning garbage dumps, drinking water is polluted and becomes unfit for consumption due to the addition of waste to water, the beauty of the environment is destroyed, and animals die due to eating waste in garbage dumps.

It is the duty of the Pradeshiya Sabha to provide health and hygiene, convenience and comfort in the area. Therefore, in order to resolve the above problems arising due to garbage, this council is paying special attention to waste management, enacting a by-law for solid waste management and establishing a solid waste center to regulate activities that are detrimental to the health and hygiene, convenience and comfort of the people of this jurisdiction.

Only sorted garbage is collected from the sub-office areas of Welimada Town, Keppetipola, Boralanda, Bogahakumbura, and Diaraba. The biodegradable garbage collected in this way is directed to the production of organic fertilizer, while the non-biodegradable garbage is collected separately as polythene, PET bottles, glass, paper and cardboard. The collected polythene is baled with the help of a baling machine and it is planned to send them to the INSEE. Arrangements have been made to sell PET bottles, cardboard, and bales.
